How To Partition an External USB Hard Drive

Level of difficulty: Intermediate

The Partitioning of an external USB hard drive for different purposes provides the user with a wide-range of options for the installed hard drive. When one partitions the hard drive, this results in the creation of isolated sections with each partition acting as an individual and distinct hard drive. For an example, the user has a 60Gb hard drive computer and wishes to set up a disk drive for a particular purpose such as copying a CD, the user could partition off 4Gb of the 60Gb hard drive that would then be acting as a separate drive. Partitioning is also done to allow the computer to run on two different Operating Systems such as Windows 98 and XP. Partitioning an external hard drive is similar to partitioning an internal hard drive so caution must be exercised by the user to ensure that that drive being partitioned is the targeted hard drive since partitioning a drive can result in the immediate and perpetual removal of all data on the drive.
Materials Needed:

- External USB Hard drive
- Installed External Hard Drive Administrator permissions

Step 1

The user must first check the external hard drive for any critical and important data that has to be saved prior to partitioning. The user must always keep in mind that whatever data is left on the hard drive will be removed and can no longer be retrieved once partitioning of the hard drive had been initiated.

Step 2

The user then runs the Microsoft Management Console in two possible ways. First way is by typing 'MMC' in a command prompt window. The second way is by simply typing 'MMC' in the Windows Start Menu 'Start Search' box.

Step 3

The user than adds the Disk Management snap-in in the MMC by selecting the add snap-in key on the File Menu. The user can choose 'Disk Management' from the menu given.

Step 4

At the bottom portion of the snap-in, right click on the disk in the short-cut menu of disks provided to the user. The short-cut menu provides the user with different choices relating to the partitioning of the hard drive. The user may opt to expand the partition, shrink the partition, remove the partition and even mark the primary partition preferred.

Step 5

The new partitions created can now be formatted by the user by making use of the same short-cut menu previously provided. The user may also program drive letters in order that the Operating System will know which among of the drives the drive letter is.

how to safe urself from hackers 100%

Here's my Top 10 list of steps you should take to protect your information and your computing resources from the bad boys and girls of cyberspace.

Back up everything! You are not invulnerable. Catastrophic data loss can happen to you -- one worm or Trojan is all it takes.

Choose passwords that are reasonably hard to guess -- don't just append a few numbers to a no-brainer. Always change default passwords.

Use an antivirus product like AVG or Norton, and set it to update daily.
Update your OS religiously and be vigilant in applying all security patches released by the software manufacturer.

Avoid hacker-bait apps like Internet Explorer and disable automatic scripting on your e-mail client.

Use encryption software like PGP (pretty good privacy) when sending sensitive e-mail. You can also use it to protect your entire hard drive.

Install a spyware detection app -- or even several. Programs that can be set to run frequently, like SpyCop, are ideal.

Use a personal firewall. Configure it to prevent other computers, networks and sites from connecting to you, and specify which programs are allowed to connect to the net automatically.

Disable any system services you're not using, especially apps that could give others remote access to your computer (like Remote Desktop, RealVNC and NetBIOS).

Secure your wireless networks. At home, enable WPA (Wi-Fi protected access) with a password of at least 20 characters. Configure your laptop to connect in Infrastructure mode only, and don't add networks unless they use WPA.

Hackers are becoming more sophisticated in conjuring up new ways to hijack your system by exploiting technical vulnerabilities or human nature. Don't become the next victim of unscrupulous cyberspace intruders.

How To Install Windows XP On A Removable Hard Drive

Removable hard drives are the ideal choice for computer users that need quite a bit of extra space. For large amounts of data storage,
a removable hard drive is a cheaper option than a flash or zip drive. There are two kinds of removable storage: internal and external hard drives.
The internal hard drive connects the same way that your main hard drive does, so using one of these requires an extra IDE connector in your computer.
External hard drives generally come with cases that make them USB adaptable to easily connect and disconnect them. In either case,
it is generally a simple process to put Windows XP on the storage device.

1
Connect the hard drive to your computer and start it as you normally would.

2
Insert the Windows XP installation disk,
and follow the instructions until you reach a part where it gives you the option to either perform a new installation or upgrade an existing installation.
Choose to perform a new installation.

3
Click on "Advanced Settings" in the next window.
This will allow you to select a location for the Windows XP installation. Select the removable hard drive you want to put Windows on.
Note that you may need to format the hard drive before installing Windows.

4
Follow the Windows XP setup instructions. The setup wizard will guide you through the rest of the process.

Speed Up Ur Internet connection

Speed Up Internet

Windows 2k/XP

1. First, open the Windows Registry using Regedit, and (after backing up) navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Tcpip\ServiceProvider
2. Note the following lines (all hex dwords):
Class = 008 ( biggrin.gif - indicates that TCP/IP is a name service provider, don't change
LocalPriority = 1f3 (499) - local names cache
HostsPriority = 1f4 (500) - the HOSTS file
DnsPriority = 7d0 (2000) - DNS
NetbtPriority = 7d1 (2001) - NetBT name-resolution, including WINS
3. What we're aiming to do is increase the priority of the last 4 settings, while keeping their order. The valid range is from -32768 to +32767 and lower numbers mean higher priority compared to other services. What we're aiming at is lower numbers without going to extremes, something like what's shown below should work well:
4. Change the "Priority" lines to:
LocalPriority = 005 (5) - local names cache
HostsPriority = 006 (6) - the HOSTS file
DnsPriority = 007 (7) - DNS
NetbtPriority = 008 ( biggrin.gif - NetBT name-resolution, including WINS
5. Reboot for changes to take effect

2. Windows 9x/ME

1. The tweak is essentialy the same as in Windows 2000/XP, just the location in the Registry is slightly different. For a more detailed description see the Windows 2000/XP section above
2. Open the Windows Registry using Regedit, and (after backing up) navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VxD\MSTCP\ServiceProvider
3. You should see the following settings:
Class=hex:08,00,00,00

LocalPriority=hex:f3,01,00,00
HostsPriority=hex:f4,01,00,00
DnsPriority=hex:d0,07,00,00
NetbtPriority=hex:d1,07,00,00
4. The "priority" lines should be changed to:
LocalPriority=hex:05,00,00,00
HostsPriority=hex:06,00,00,00
DnsPriority=hex:07,00,00,00
NetbtPriority=hex:08,00,00,00
5. Reboot for changes to take effect

3. System.ini IRQ Tweak - Windows 9x/ME ONLY

1. Find your Network Card's IRQ

1. In order to add the entry to your System.ini file, you'd first have to find your NIC's IRQ
2. Right-click on My Computer icon on your Desktop, then left-click on Properties (a shortcut for that would be to press the 'Windows' + 'Pause' keys). Navigate to Device Manager and double-click on Computer. Under "View Resources" you will find a list of IRQs, each with description of the device that's using it. Note the IRQ number used by your Network Adapter

2. Adding the entry to System.ini

1. Once you've found the IRQ of your Network Card, you need to reserve some RAM for its use, by adding an entry to the System.ini file. You can edit the file in any text editor, however the easiest way is to use Windows' built in "System Configuration Editor"
2. Navigate to Start > Run and type sysedit . Find the [386enh] Section in the System.ini file and add Irq[n]=4096 under it, where [n] is the IRQ number of your NIC and 4096 is the amount of RAM you want to reserve in Kbytes. We recommend using 4096, however you can experiment with different values if you want. Save changes in the file, exit and reboot for changes to take effect.
Note: If you choose to try different values, keep in mind that reserving too much RAM for your NIC will decrease the amount of RAM available for applications, while reserving too little might not give the desired effect

3. Additional Thoughts
1. The only negative effect of the System.ini IRQ tweak is that it will reduce the amount of RAM available for running applications a bit, by reserving some specifically for your Network Card's use. The gain in performance usually outweighs the negative effect by far, considering any Computer with 32Mb of RAM or more
2. This tweak may or may not work for you. It is not a documented tweak by Windows
3. Keep in mind that if you add hardware to your system the IRQ of the Network Adapter might change, in which case you will need to modify the setting in System.ini
4. In systems with multiple NICs, you might want to add the setting for both IRQs. Also, you could reserve RAM for other IRQs if you wish, just use common sense and don't forget it reduces the amount of RAM available for running applications
5. If you are using an USB device, it does not have a specific IRQ, however you can try adding the entry using the IRQ of the USB Controller
6. For internal Cable Modems, you'd have to add the entry using the IRQ of your modem, rather than the IRQ of a Network Card

Increase Hard Drive Speeds in XP

Simple Tweaking and also works with Windows 2003...

NOTE: I only recommend doing this if you have 256mb of RAM or higher.

STEP 1: Start > Run > then type SYSEDIT.EXE

STEP 2: Expand the system.ini file window.

STEP 3: Scroll down almost to the end of the file till you find a line called [386enh]

STEP 4: Press Enter to make one blank line, and in that line type

Irq14=4096

NOTE: The above info for the new line is case sensitive

STEP 6: Select File > Save

STEP 7: Close SYSEDIT and reboot your computer

NOTE: Once your computer has been rebooted, you should notice a change in your hdd's performance. I have tested this on IDE hdd's and it has worked fine. I've read in a few locations online that it could possibly work for SCSI disks but I don't have any to attempt the theory. If someone does test it and can vouch for the SCSI's improved performance, please let me know.

How to Select Motherboard

the following advises are based on many years of experience. They are provided as a free service to our customers and visitors. However, Computer Warehouse is not responsible for any damage as a result of following any of these guides.

If you are building a new system we highly recommend going with a CPU and the motherboard that is of current technology such as, the AMD Athlon 64 or the Intel Pentium 4 (LGA775), in order to maintain an upgrade path. Once you know what form factor you are going to use you must make sure that the motherboard you are going to use supports the bus speed of your processor or higher. For instance, if you were buying an Intel Pentium 4 processor with a 533MHz bus it doesn’t make sense to buy a motherboard that only supports a max bus speed of 400MHz.

The reliability of motherboard as measured by return rates is roughly correlated with the price you pay. As a rule of thumb: the higher the price the better the reliability. We suspect that the manufacturers who have higher profit margins do more extensive testing and quality control before shipping. Therefore, we suggest that you buy a motherboard of the highest price your budget can afford. It is not easy to replace a motherboard, even for professional technicians. Besides, if the motherboard is bad, your whole system is likely to be in jeopardy.

On the other hand, motherboards do not have any moving, consumable parts. If they go bad, most often they do so within a month. If you can take your chances and are willing to learn how to replace a motherboard, the less expensive motherboards are just fine for budget minded buyers.

Buy current but proven technology. Purchasing yesterday’s technology can mean greater difficulty or limitation in future upgrades. For example, it doesn’t make sense to buy a Socket 478 motherboard anymore, since Intel stopped making Socket 478 processors when they reached the 2.4GHz speed. Socket 478 processors are now starting to become rare and their performance is lacking compare to newer Socket LGA 775 versions.

WARNING: Changing a motherboard from one type to another with different BIOS/chipset usually requires reinstallation of your operating system, particularly under Windows 9x. This happens because Windows 9x is designed to be “smart” enough to recognize some hardware; however, once it is set you can’t change it easily. This can be an upgrade nightmare if you are not prepared for it. Be prepared to do a full operating system install/re-install when you change a motherboard!

Regarding chipsets: The chipset is what makes your motherboard work. Different chipsets support different things, and have different integrated features. Chipset companies are usually very competitive, especially third party ones such as nVIDIA, VIA and SiS. In general the newer a chipset is for a given series of processors, the better the performance will be. However, the first few motherboards with a brand new chipset are more likely to have problems then motherboards produced later on. Often these sorts of problems are cleared up through patches, bios updates, and other fixes but it can be disappointing to get the latest, hottest new motherboard on the market and then find out it doesn’t like part x due to a bios problem after you install the board. The saying goes: “If you stay on bleeding edge, then you are likely to bleed.” The best thing to do is to research the motherboard you are interested in at the manufacturer’s website and at popular review website. It usually isn’t a good sign if the motherboard manufacturer does not have at least one bios update available. Also, motherboard manufacturers learn from the mistakes of their rivals and from their own previous mistakes. The third or fourth motherboard that hits the market using a new chipset is less likely to have problems than the first one to hit the market.

To integrate or not to integrate? Integration is a current industry trend. It saves cost and space to integrate as many components onto the motherboard as possible such as video, audio, modem, and network card. Integrated motherboards tend to have limitations on future upgrade ability and expandability. It is not recommended for power users. It may however serve first time and budget-minded buyers and as a second machine as well. The reliability of integrated motherboards have improved significantly in recent years, although the chances for something to go wrong on an integrated motherboard is still higher than a non-integrated one.

Convenience factor: If you are familiar with or have a large installation base with one brand/model of motherboard, staying with the same brand may help you minimize the number of manuals to keep. If nothing else, you want to keep your motherboard manual for as long as possible in the event of a problem with the manufacturer. Motherboard manufacturers now usually offer downloadable versions of their manuals online in order to assists their customers and to provide a way to correct errata. However, some manufacturers have been known to change the features on a motherboard without changing motherboard model. This creates problems later on if you have to download a manual, as the motherboard you have may be different than the revised one that manual is meant for.

If volume matters to you, guess who is by far the number one motherboard manufacturer in sales? Intel. Their volume comes mainly from OEM channels! Asus and Gigabytes/MSI are in second and third places.
